Highs & Lows

The week began with a fantastic away performance and result against Swansea. We gained revenge for the previous game with a display which was quite possibly the best of the season so far. We defended resolutely and always looked capable of scoring at the other end. It was certainly the quietest game I&rsqu ...

An Eventful Week

A very eventful week followed by defeat at Swansea. The news of Aidy’s departure shocked everyone  at the club, things haven’t been great in recent weeks - but I don’t think anyone had foreseen the defeat against Blackpool being his final game in charge.

A Tough Week All Round

Football can be a cruel game - on a personal level and as a team this has been a tough week.

Two defeats from games that could, on other days, have produced six points. We played well against Preston and deserved more than the 0-2 scoreline we ended up with - and the same can be said ...

Keepers Get A Raw Deal!

After watching Liverpool face Man Utd something became quite apparent to me: keepers really do get a raw deal! It wasn’t this game alone that has guided me to this conclusion but it was more apparent in this game than most.

Van der Sar didn’t have his finest afternoon but the commentators were quick to pounce on his mistakes and offered little credit when it was deserved - yet later in the game Robbie Keane missed a good chance and instead of criticism, the comment made was "Don’t worry about it Robbie, they’ll come soon and once they do they’ll come like buses". Far kinder than the words used to describe Van der Sar’s mishap which ranged from "shocking", to "catastrophic"!

It seems to me that when a striker misses a good chance it is very rare that they get pulled up on it. Maybe I am biased being a keeper myself but it disappointed me to see Reina make a fantastic tip over the bar and 90 per cent of the credit went to whoever it was taking the shot and not Reina.

The save itself was very good for a few reasons; It was a bouncing ball which meant Reina instantly read the situation and dropped three yards expecting a dipping volley - had he not made this movement then the situation would have undoubtedly ended in a goal. A small detail but a crucial one, one that many commentators wouldn’t have a clue it had even occurred. Then the save itself needed some incredible agility and acrobatics which were almost a given. In, fact Reina was faultless all afternoon and some of his distribution was awesome and went without mention.

In my opinion the problem on this occasion was that all the pundits and commentators involved were all outfield players before they retired. This is quite common and it often leads to some bizarre analysis of goalkeepers. It can be quite frustrating being a goalkeeper and knowing exactly why a keeper has done what he has done and having some ex-centre forward explaining what he believes he should’ve done!

I don’t want to sound like a bitter keeper because I’m really not, we all understand what to expect when becoming a goalkeeper, you really do put yourself in the firing line.

I guess my only wish would be to have more goalkeeping pundits to offer a different point of view but there seem to be very few of them about currently. Oh well, hopefully 10 or so more years playing then I’ll be sure to apply!

Well said Richard. It is my biggest hate to hear how when a striker misses a good chance its always his fault and never good work by the keeper. Plus if the keeper dares put a foot wrong then he should be dropped, whereas if a striker misses a dozen sitters yet scores a screamer late on he's lauded as showing his world class quality.

I must agree with your comments about the commentators, I take into account the penalty Robert Green gave away, they say a "clear foul" but watch the slow motion, and then its a "Massive error by Green", ok, he spilt the first effott, but what is he ment to, he put his hand on the ball then the player went over his arm. Pundits and commentators know very little about goalkeeping and also comments about how Tim Howard should deal with Rory Delap's long throws, summed it up for me.

I have to agree. We are very much on our own, and it takes some thick skin to be a goalkeeper, but somebody has to do it. I also tend to get it from my own defenders who have some bizarre ideas about what goalkeepers should do.

Richard, Great comments about the game, being a liverpool fan i am happy with the result. But also being a liverpool fan i cant be happy with the teams finishing, imo i feel Liverpool should have won by more than they did. Kuyt had 3 good chances (2 of which were well saved by VDS) and Keane had some chances too that were not capilized on. Of course nobody is talkin about the poor finishing they are talkin about the mistake by VDS. I think VDS had an ok game, he had some big saves after a shaky start but no GK is perfect and they will always be mistakes made, the great ones limit these mistakes and since we as GKs make mistakes that generally lead to a goal our mistakes are more catasrophic than one by a striker. Also, Reina's save was top notch and i tried to explain to the guys i was watching the game with why it was so dificult to make and they didnt understand why because they dont know what it is like to be a GK. I think it would be nice to get some former GKs as anouncers/analysts to try and give our side of view. Shaka Hislop was a comentator for the USA vs T&T game and it was nice to hear a GKs view ocasionally, he still needs work but I think he will get better and will be used in more MLS games and US qualyfing games which is what i am looking forward too. Finally have you ever looked at theglovebag.com??? It is an interactive website for GKs and they turned me on to your website and it is a great place to get info on goalkeeping. They also have quite the discusion about the game. Thanks and great site!!!! Good luck i am sure you will be in the first team soon, i am pullin for u. Jason
